Inside all of our heads we have different emotions and each one of these emotions in this movie are a character and we primarily focus on the emotions inside a young girl's head (Riley). What's fascinating to me about the premise is not only do we see the emotions inside Riley's head, but we also see the emotions inside the parents heads too.
As the trailer progresses, two of Riley's emotions Sadness and Joy (her main emotion) are accidentally sucked through a tube leaving Disgust, Fear and Anger to man 'Headquarters'. In the outside world Riley's world is turned upside down when the family re-locates to a new city. From what I see in the trailer, I feel like Riley begins to develop depression. Depression is a very heavy subject, particulary for a Pixar film when Pixar generally makes films more tailored to children (or a better way of putting it), child-friendly adult films.
If Pixar can successfully talk about depression in a movie that is obviously going to make a lot of money, cost a lot of money and be very mainstream I feel it would be absolutely incredible because it would open up a subject matter I feel is regarded as quite taboo in contemporary films, let alone animated films. This is especially fascinating for me because in Applied Animation, I am making an animation about a teenager with depression. I too am trying to make something that won't depress the audience, I too am trying to make something that could be watched by anyone.
